In order to have the opportunity to sell their products as organic, farms, livestock companies and processing companies must comply with the technical standards contained in the Community regulation Reg. Cee 2092/91 and must obtain approval from an authorized inspection body authorized by the Ministry of Forestry and Agriculture.
In Italy there are entities called "Organismi di Controllo" (Inspection bodies) authorized by the Ministry of Forestry and Agriculture to carry out checks directly on companies and certify organic production (DM 220/9). The entities that can give information regarding "how to be certificated as an organic company" are; professional Agronomists, land surveyors, manufacturers associations, professional agricultural organizations, provinces or Inspection bodies.
After having considered if "to be certified as an organic company" is a real opportunity for a company, it can apply to join the sector and initially obtain the recognition of "organic farm in conversion" and subsequently to a conversion period your company will obtain the "organic farm" certification, characterized by the logo on picture. The notification is a declaration of commitment on the part of those who subscribe to it to:
- undergo inspection from an authorized inspection body authorized by the Ministry of Forestry and Agriculture
- observe the community and national rules
- accept the sanctions in case of infraction
There are entities that certify the respect of the rules and make sure there is no abuse of the "organic" certification: therefore they guarantee that the product is "bio" or "organic".
