The Sicilian blood orange remains a worldwide unicum for its strong identity and its health properties. A study carried out by the Plant Protection Service of the Sicilian Region, in cooperation with the Japanese one, regarding the export of citrus fruits in Japan by the method of "cold-treatment", has demonstrated that blood oranges keep all their organoleptic and commercial characteristics if exported. Thus the protocol for the export of blood oranges in Japan - already started for the variety "Tarocco" in 2005 - has been extended to the varieties "Moro” and “Sanguinello."
