The language of organic and eco-friendly quality

_DSC7351In the heart of Umbria, Baccarelli family created a company which is a small world apart, where art and landscape become one, beginning from the products of the earth. Roccafiore, about 40 km south of Perugia, in the territory of Todi, is an ‘island’ surrounded by nature, managed by young people for whom a human dimension and the attention for the environment are much more than a philosophy. Roccafiore consists in a winery, a resort, a restaurant and a spa. It has 90 hectares, where legumes and cereals are grown, oil is produced and there is a small farm of ‘Cinta Senese’ pigs, too. But the activity which drives this business is the production of rigorously organic wines, which boast the designation DOC Todi and the EU certification. They are born in 12 acres on a hillside, 380 m above sea level. The protection of the ecological balances of this area and the physiological ones of plants, the cultivation of autochthonous varieties, the care for the soil and the rediscovery of traditional practices, the adoption of renewable energy installations, and the production decisions oriented to the total respect for the environment, are an integral part of the continuous search for quality excellence of Roccafiore. This goal is pursued by means of advanced oenological and technological choices, too, which contemplate a constant monitoring of the natural evolution of the products, from fermentation to bottling. _DSC7533 copia
9 wines for 90 thousand bottles
Il RoccafioreIn 2013 the company has produced 90 thousand bottles of wine, obtained thanks to the work carried out on the local ‘Grechetto’ vines of Todi, Spoleto Trebbiano, Sangiovese, Sagrantino, and Montepulciano by the Tyrolean oenologist Hartmann Donà. So, among others, ‘DOC Bianco Fiordaliso Todi Grechetto’, ‘IGT Rosato Roccafiore Umbria Rosato’, ‘IGT Prova D’autore Umbria Rosso’, ‘IGT Collina D’oro Umbria Passito’, ‘DOC Montefalco Rosso’, and ‘DOCG Montefalco Sagrantino’ were born. Altogether, nine types of wine, which last year guaranteed to Roccafiore a turnover of about 400 thousand euros. Among the spearheads of this winery, there is the ‘DOC Rosso MFiorfioreelograno Todi Rosso’, characterized by a brilliant ruby red colour, scents of mixed berries, plum, and herbal notes, a pleasant taste, good tastiness, acidity, and soft tannins. It is ideal combined with courses of black truffle. The ‘DOC Rosso Roccafiore Todi Sangiovese Superiore’, then, is a great expression of this territory. Its colour is red ruby, it is characterized by aroma of ripe plums, red berries, tobacco, liquorice, and good structure. It shows extreme class and cleanliness, elegant tannins, and it is ideal with red meats or sausages. Another Roccafiore pearl, which presents itself to its best 3 or 4 years after the harvest, is the ‘Doc Fiorfiore Todi Grechetto Superiore’, characterized by a pale yellow colour tending to golden; the scent of this wine reminds fruits of pineapple and Golden Delicious apple, as well as small yellow flowers and delicate notes of sweet spices, while its flavour is warm and soft, supported by good freshness and minerality, with great elegance and complexity.
From Europe to the USA, up to Asia
For export, Roccafiore relies on importers who distribute its products in medium and high level restaurants; its packaging, thanks to an ad hoc restyling, gives consumers the opportunity of perceiving both prestige and importance of these Umbrian wines. Luca Baccarelli, who today manages the company created by his father Leonardo, explains: «‘At least 50% of our production is destined for sale abroad. We export to the United States and in Asia, in such Countries as China, Japan and Taiwan; we sell our bottles in Australia, Israel, but also in the European market, in Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, Finland, Norway, and England. DSC_0533Just in the first three months of 2014, we exceeded last year's sales in the East: as a matter of fact, in the whole year 2013 we exported to Asia 7,000 bottles, while from January to March in this market more than 9,000 bottles have already been opened. A key contribution as for this was given by Valentina Davide, our consultant for foreign markets, who, by choosing the most strategic Countries, has allowed us to grow in a rational way. For the future, we aim at consolidating the existing markets, as well as communicating in an increasingly strong way both our identity and values».

The secret of success
Production of organic wines only, with a special attention for the environment: this is the strategic decision which allowed Roccafiore to succeed, not only in Italy, but also on international markets. LUCA BACCARELLILuca Baccarelli confirms: «It’s a bet on which we have invested since our first day. The foreign consumer is very careful to quality, as well as choosing wines produced in companies which respect the environment. The consumer who uncorks one of our bottles must perceive that it has been produced by protecting the ecosystem that surrounds it. Today we notice a great appreciation even in markets that are culturally distant and the fact that we are present in the wine lists of some of the best restaurants in Italy and around the world allows us to understand that our products speak the language of quality. The efforts we made in recent years repay us completely. This proves that, if we work seriously, nothing is impossible».
